A recent analysis shows that consuming millets in your daily life helps to fight against cardiovascular diseases, strokes, and another heart-related diseases. Millets have a lot of health-enriching properties which are good for heart health. Therefore, it is necessary to know about the millets now.
The study
The regular intake of millets reduces cholesterol, triacylglycerols aka (triglycerides), and BMI, reported from a study. This is the latest study analysis – Data of 19 studies around 900 people.

Altogether, this study was conducted by five organizations and it is led under International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT). However, the results published on Frontier's nutrition page emphasize the significance of millets in our daily diet. Millets in our daily diet, especially staples – develop growth and also helps in preventing obesity, overweight in children, adolescents, and adults.
The Analysis
The above study report showed that regular consumption of millets reduces cholesterol by 8 percent, lowers the range from high to normal, found from the people's data. Moreover, it shows lowers the percentage of 10% decrease, and also lipoprotein cholesterol (‘Bad Cholesterol’) in a very low density. The level of triacylglycerol in the blood is even found at a low level. These reductions reveal the range falls from above normal to the normal group. In another form, the regular consumption of millets tends to decrease the level of blood pressure. The lower number in BP reading is known as diastolic BP, is known to decrease by 5 percent.
The study's lead author and senior nutritionist at ICRISAT, Dr. S, Anitha expressed that they were surprised by the recent studies on human's interest in consuming millets as it reduced the risk of heart diseases. Secondly, she said that this is the first time this data study and analysis in testing the significant impacts. It seems they even used meta-analysis and found strong results showing positive impacts in reducing the riskiness of cardiovascular disease.

On analyzing the study further, it is understood that millet consumption also reduced BMI by 7 percent in people who resulted in overweight and obese. Data shows the numerical values in the form of (from28.5 (+/-2.4) to 26.7 (+/-1.8) kg/m2), a possible normal range of BMI (less than 25 kg/m2). These results are derived from the amount of millet (50 to 200gms) consumption per day in 21 days to approximately 4 months.
The findings
Now, these findings are shown from the comparison of millets with high unsaturated fatty acids. They were even found to be 2 to 10 times higher than the level of refined wheat and milled rice, yet higher when compared to whole grain wheat.
Natural Institute of Nutrition (NIN) Director, Dr. Hemalatha told that unhealthy diet foods are the major reason for threatening diseases like cardio-related and diabetes. Hence the final results along with our examination show that consumption of millets on daily basis reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. It even helps to manage type 2 diabetes; highlighting the critical importance of the millets diet in India. She also ensured that this information reaches the majority to reduce the risk of diseases.
ICRISAT Director-General, Dr. Jacqueline Hughes shared that obesity and overweight are major in wealthy and poor countries. However, the only solution for this is healthier diet foods in our routine. This typical information on the health benefits of millets encourages our farmers the need to invest more in whole grain products. Through the process of the whole value chain, farmers can produce better varieties by combining with agribusiness developments.

This detailed study prioritized the importance of millets in various forms, including varieties and differences for the future. It further insists to follow the cooking and processing of millets in a regular food style to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
Some positive recommendations indicate to analyze more on the impact of millet weight management methods. The above-mentioned parameters also make us understand the millet consumption on diseases like hyperlipidemia and cardiovascular conditions.
