Chennai December season’s food rasigas along with the music rasigas
Years 2020 & 2021 were easy for me for Sabha Hopping as there were limited choices and no hype around them. It was peaceful. Sabha Canteen is the time when food rasigas along with the music rasigas get to satiate their soul as well as tummies.
There's a purpose for the canteens. One should either appreciate music or appreciate food or at least appreciate the effort behind all that food. As is true with all food trends, Sabha food has been also hyped and being sold at exorbitant rates for average food in general. It's a sacred profession/business to serve food. Somewhere the purpose is slowly deteriorating. Well, I wouldn't really crib about it if not for our culture being attached to this tradition. We are slowly killing our own traditions by not respecting them.

Well, it was a tough call but Zero-ed in on Anu Catering. Been to their Sabha Canteen before and liked their food so I was sure I wasn't going to be disappointed. Cost per meals was ₹200. As soon as I reached, I saw Beans Poriyal on the menu card and was contemplating to turn back. Such is my love for French Beans, you see. But, luckily, the Poriyal served was Pudalangai (Snake Gourd). I was like, great escape!
Actually, thinking of it now, I think it was pretty decent fare and I actually tried everything. Started off with Podi and Ghee. Then Capsicum Sambar and Kathrikai Kaara Kuzhambu. Then Rasam followed by More and Payasam. There were Nookal Poriyal and Poosani Kootu also served. Overall, I certainly liked what I ate. Simple, no flare yet full of flavor kind of meals.
Mountbatten Mani Iyer
Mountbatten Mani Iyer is close to my heart and I had to somehow make time for him. Reason being, it was with this brand that my first ever Sabha Canteen experience (some 7 years ago) happened. Since they weren’t there during last 2 years Sabha Canteen times I had to make sure to visit them this year.

They are not in a Sabha this year. They’ve taken up space at Hemamalini Kalyana Mandapam, Royapettah.Started off with Cashew Keerai Vadai (₹70). This Keerai Vadai was crispy on the outside and soft in the inside.
Couldn’t really find Cashews but if they say it’s there I’ve to believe them, illa ya? Apple Bajji (₹60) was good. Heart shaped Thattu Idli (₹150) were cute looking. The Red Rice Kuzha Puttu with stuffed Nendhiram (₹180) was ahhh-mazing! Could have avoided ordering Vegetables Kuzhi Paniyaram (₹75). But Thiruvayaru Ashoka Halwa (₹100/50gm) is a must to order. Final touch has to be Filter Coffee (₹50) for sure. Done & Dusted for the sake of old times.
