Chicken Biryani Potti Soru ,Beef Sandwich and much more must try Karaikal native foods

Hotel Buhari, Neravy, Karaikal:

This was kind of a reunion for me. Karaikal is a place that was my first ever solo food trip and I think I made utmost use of it back in 2017. And, Buhari at Neravy hasn’t changed much except for the business volume that’s gone up. I see a dedicated Raal omelette counter now which didn’t exist before which also only means that the demand for the item has gone up.

They’ve stopped serving “Inippu Pulippu” now which was very unique to Karaikal culture. The Dalcha tasted epic, as usual. Everything else very similar to what I had previously except that onions have gotten more space along with the meat in all sides. Namakku, Avlo vaa onions aagadhu but I’m sure many will love it.  Totally paid ₹710 which is very reasonable considering the fact that we demolished half their kitchen menu.

Chicken Biryani Potti Soru - Babu Bhandari, Karaikal.

My first ever experience with Potti Soru was with Biryani only. Pulav Saapdu and all never existed back then. I will always remember the Biryani from Karaikal as to be one of the most flavourful one.

Chicken Biryani Potti Soru

Yes, it has irritants for sure. But, the usage of Rampa Ilai (Pandan leaves) makes this short grained Biryani a very fragrant and aromatic one. Dalcha always has a special place in my heart. So, how can this be not one of my favourite. For those who don’t like short grained style Biryani… Konjam kashtam than!

Vaada!!

A unique snack food from Kayalpattinam/Karaikal/Nagapattinam side that caught my fantasy in 2017. When I learnt about it back then I was really interested to know more and found it in Karaikal and watched it being made and sold live. The lady who was making it (outside a Masjid) objected to photograph the making so I left it at that. So, when we fixed our mind to visit Nagoor for a evening to try the street food, I had already fixed that I'm going to somehow try it again.

A small piece of shrimp is placed in the Rice Batter based Vadai and then deep fried. It's served with some Raw Onion (Salad). Actually, it's the Onions that add some character to the Vaada. Because on it's own the Vaada can taste bland to people like me who are used to Vaadai with added spices and herbs. The Vaada costs ₹5.

Nagore Beef Sandwich!

It's not an unique invention and in fact I was left wondering how did Hot Dog Buns end up coming to place like Nagore/Nagoor. For someone who went in search of local street foods, this one was a culture shock. But, my taste bud refuses to agree with me. This Beef Sandwich (as they call it) was yummy. The soft Bun with a Beef Keema center was laced with Mayo and Sauce. And, some how altogether tasted good. Cost of Beef Sandwich was ₹30.
